new posts

After a bit of a hiatus while I was doing most of my postings at my old work blog, Off the Shelf (http://www.capella-id.com/library/) I am know back. Quick change of the URL and the header and a newish blog is born.

I have just started as the Information Literacy Librarian at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities Libraries. I realize my poor habits in keeping up with the literature so I am renewing my efforts to get back on ye olde horse of reading the academic literature. So here are a few things I have been reading this week.

CLIR issues (Number 63, May/June 2008)
http://www.clir.org/pubs/issues/index.html
  • Overview of "Rethinking Research Libraries in the 21st Century"
  • Such as..."Instruction and delivery mechanisms should be designed according to what we know of human learning and discover. The functions of libraries much be aligned within the core mission of research and education at the institutional level. We need to create the professional and practice layers that enhance research and teaching activities across disciplines"
"Science 2.0" by Ben Shneiderman (Science, Vol. 319, March 7, 2008)
  • Brief article which extols the necessity for science to begin studying the 2.0 in real world, large scale research.
  • "Advancing Science 2.0 will require a shift in priorities to promote integrative thinking that combines computer science know-how with social science sensitivity."
  • Interesting example from Social Action (http://www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/socialaction/) on the kind of research he is talking about.
